Use these 3 tools to discover your superpower and wield it like the boss mama you are
Mama, what’s your superpower? This is one of the first questions I ask all of my clients. Most people either don’t know how to answer this question or believe that they don’t have one. But that’s not true. Every single person has a superpower, even if they don’t realize it.
The reason this question blindsides so many women is that they have never taken the time to think about what we’re good at and what strengths we have. Instead, we focus on the negative things about ourselves: what we didn’t get done in a day, the things we can’t do well.
When you start taking time to focus on the good things, you can unearth your superpower. We are each blessed with unique gifts and talents. We can use those gifts to lead our families, accomplish our goals, help our kids navigate challenges. Knowing and understanding your superpower will you give SUPER POWER!
Your superpower is meant to be used, but if you don’t know what it is, you’re missing one of the biggest tools available to you! Once you understand your superpower you can wield it to help you do anything you want - including losing weight!
Journaling will be an important step in discovering your superpowers. If you can get curious about your superpower, meditate and then take pen to paper and work out those thoughts, you’re going to discover what your superpower is! You don’t have to actually use a pen and paper, but you need to take them out of your mind put into a physical form. You can type up your thoughts if that’s better for you!
Superpower discovery tool #1: Get curious about the people you admire
The first step in discovering your superpower is writing down the names of people who inspire you and who have made an impact in your world. Think about family members, mentors, teachers, other mamas, anyone who has made an impression on you.
Then write down what it is about them that you admire. Are they loyal? Do they persevere? What qualities do they have that you value? Those qualities are usually the values that are important to you. The characteristics that you notice and admire in other people are most likely the things you want to cultivate in yourself.
You can also identify the qualities in yourself that you would like to leave behind with the same trick. Sometimes seeing what qualities we don’t like helps us understand ourselves and change just as much!
If one trait really sticks out to you, then you can dissect it and see if you have similar thoughts, processes or actions. You may even realize that you have that superpower!
Superpower discovery tool #2: Create an endless list of what you do well
Next, I want you to create an endless list of your strengths and what you do well. As you start creating a list of your strengths, don’t get caught in the trap of focusing on what you don’t do well or what you aren’t good at, instead brag on yourself and praise yourself for all the things you’re good at! Don’t try to be humble! This is the time to talk about yourself like you talk about your kids. Don’t hold back!
The reason this list should be endless is that you will always keep adding to it! You don’t have to come up with a million things in one sitting. Instead, make adding to this list a part of your weekly routine. Go back at the end of each week and think about what you did well and then add those wins to your list! Even the smallest win can help you recognize what you’re good at!
Making the connection between your strengths and how they’re playing out in your day-to-day life will help you utilize your superpowers in your weight loss journey
Perhaps your superpower is patience, you can use that patience to help you stick to your health goals because you know they don’t have to happen right away. Maybe you’re super organized and you use that to keep track of your food in your food journal. If you’re compassionate, you can use that to give yourself grace as you make it through your health journey. Your superpower may not be physically obvious, but all superpowers can be wielded to help us reach our goals.
Superpower Discovery Tool #3: Ask people what they think you’re good at
It can be very enlightening to ask other people what they think your strengths are because it’s always harder to see the good in ourselves than in other people. However, asking other people what you’re good at is the last strategy because it puts your power in other people’s hands.
I do not want you to go to people who do not have your best interests at heart. If your mom, best friend, aunt, etc, are negative Nellies, then don’t go to them. Go to the people who you respect, admire and trust, like the people you wrote down on your admiration list.
Explain to them that you’re trying to figure out what your superpower is and ask them what they think your character strengths are. People who have a growth mindset and are positive and uplifting will help you see your strengths and will be happy to tell you what you do well!
Write those strengths down and then search out the actions in your life. When you make the connection between your actions and the words other people use to describe you, you’ll find that those strengths are true to you!
Bonus: Discovery what attributes aren’t your superpowers
Knowing your superpower is so powerful, but sometimes realizing the things that you aren’t so super at can be just as useful!
You don’t need to waste your time trying to fit into an idea that doesn’t align with you. If you realize that patience isn’t your super power, then trying to make a dinner that has 25 steps isn’t going to make you feel good! You can avoid the frustration that will come with that by playing to your strengths instead of beating yourself up for not being super at everything!
You can always work on developing new superpowers, but give yourself grace as you do that. It’s unrealistic and hurtful to expect yourself to be perfect at everything! Start by working with your natural strengths and be kind as you develop more superpowers.
I hope that you come away from these exercises with a better understanding of your superpower. Understanding your superpower is going to take you to where you want to go. On the hard days, you can lean on that superpower to get you where you want to go.
There is no greater gift that you can give yourself than to understand who you are. Celebrate who you are and use it to improve, not only your life but the lives of the people around you.
